Volunteer Opportunities

Arthur Lesow Community Center (ALCC)
Volunteers are needed in the Educational Advocacy Program (EAP) to tutor 5th and 6th graders who face challenging obstacles to being successful in school. Three sessions will be held weekly from 5:00 – 6:00 pm (½ hour Tutoring in academic areas, and ½ hour of Club Time with activities and snacks provided).

 

Monroe Public Schools/Cantrick
Volunteers needed to mentor and tutor 5th grade students within the classroom.

 

Monroe Public Schools/Custer Elementary I
Volunteers are needed to provide adult supervision and guidance for the students who are trained for the “Peer-to-Peer” program.  The “Peer-to-Peer” trained students will then assist other students with reading, filing, finding book locations, buddy reading, and various other mentoring assignments.

 

The Bedford Trade Fair
The next Trade Fair is scheduled for March 6 & 6, 2010.  If you are interested in being
a Greeter and distributing  programs at the main door let me know.  I will put you on
the call list and get back to you in early February to schedule a two hour time slot for you.

 

American Cancer Society
Road to Recovery is a service offered by the American Cancer Society in which volunteer drivers provide cancer patients transportation to and from their scheduled treatments. Drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicles to help ensure that cancer patients get the lifesaving treatments they need. To become a volunteer driver you must own a safe and reliable vehicle, have a current valid driver's license, proof of adequate automobile insurance, have a good driving record and attend Road to Recovery volunteer training. Project Read
Project Read is a community effort to help adults improve their reading skills.  We are looking for tutors, as a tutor you will receive all of the training you need to help others learn the skills they need to learn more about the world.  It can be very rewarding for everyone. Tutors and students are matched as nearly as possible by interest.  If you are interested in Project Read call either the RSVP Bedford or Monroe offices and we will get you started.

 
Bedford Branch Library
The “Friends of the Bedford Library” need volunteers to help in their Book Room at the Bedford Branch Library. Volunteers will sort, display, and sell used books. Many time slots are available including evening and Sunday hours. If you have a couple hours a week to help at your local library call for available openings.
 
God Works! Community Dinners
Volunteers are needed to help set up the dining area, serve the meal, and help with clean-up for the God Works! meals served at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church on Monday nights and at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Wednesday nights. Volunteers will need to arrive at the designated Church on their scheduled day at 5:00 pm and plan on staying until 7:30 pm. Although meals are held every week at the churches we are only scheduling each volunteer to help once or twice a month. To volunteer at the Bedford area God Works! meal sites contact Dianne Carroll at the Bedford RSVP office.
 

Monroe County Youth Center
Need volunteers to assist mentoring youth in the court-ordered residential treatment program with the Reading Buddy Program: Great Stories Book Club, for an hour per week by reading aloud, listening to audio books or silently reading together. The MI Department of Education provides a mandatory list of book titles/authors from which to choose your reading material.

 
Lions Den Resale Shop
Volunteers are needed for the Lions Den Resale Shop in Temperance from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Volunteers work one day per week.
 
Nursing Home Visiting
We have requests for volunteers to do visitation to residents in area nursing homes. A short visit from someone means so much to those who are unable to get out. If you have time to spare this winter think about making someone feel special. You can visit, read, play a game of cards, or help with meals or special projects
 
Bedford Senior Citizens Center
Volunteers are needed to help with special projects and fundraisers. We also need Meals-On-Wheels drivers and runners, volunteers to answer phones and bingo callers.
 
Bedford Public Schools
If you are interested in volunteering in the Bedford Public Schools working with children as a tutor, in the reading program, or with special needs classes. Adult Education is looking for reading mentors in the evenings, call for information.
 
RSVP Bedford Office
If you would like to help with mailings, assembling newsletters, and other special projects call and let us know and we will add you to our list of volunteers to call when we have this type of project to do.
 
Erie West Hospice
Erie West Hospice & Palliative Care in Lambertville is looking for volunteers to help provide the extra care and attention to persons who are living in their own homes or in area nursing homes. You can visit, read, or simply hold a hand. Training is provided.
 
Faith-In-Action (FIA)
Looking for volunteers to visit with homebound seniors in the Monroe County area.
 
RSVP of Monroe County/MonroeOffice
Flexible volunteers interested in assisting with “Spur-of-the-Moment” requests for “Special Projects” which are needed by several non-profit agencies on a temporary basis to answer the phone, take messages, file, collate, stuff envelopes, etc.
 
Family Counseling & ShelterServices
Volunteers to assist the Shelter Advocate with answering the crisis phone line, work with women, participate in play activities with children, sort donations, light cleaning on Mondays - Fridays from 4:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Volunteer advocates to become part of the Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team and be “On-Call” for 12 hour periods (through the night) to respond to the “secured” scene, support the victim and her children, provide resources, offer a safety plan and shelter to help them be safe., Monday - Fridays: 4:00 - 8:00 pm (Either 2 or 4 hour shifts) Saturdays and Sundays also available.
